A color that looks perfect on your phone can feel completely different on your wall. Start with your home, its light, and the things you plan to keep.
Start with the fixed finishes
Look at your floors, countertops, tile, and large furniture before collecting paint chips. Choose a color family that works with those surfaces. If your flooring feels warm and golden, compare warm neutrals as well as cooler options instead of assuming every white will match.
Narrow the choices before you sample
Pick two or three candidates. Place samples near trim, flooring, and a window, and look at them in morning light, afternoon light, and with your usual lamps on. Use the paint maker’s recommended sampling method. A small screen image is a starting point, not a final approval.
Think about neighboring rooms
Stand where you can see more than one room. The colors do not need to match, but they should feel intentional together. Repeat a neutral or an accent in a rug, pillow, or piece of art to create continuity.
Try this before you decide
Write three words describing the feeling you want: calm, bright, cozy, or clean. When two shades are close, choose the one that supports that feeling and works with your existing finishes. Keep the final color name, number, brand, and sheen with your project notes.
