Two painting prices are only comparable when they describe the same work. A useful estimate gives you enough detail to understand what is included before you decide.
Name the surfaces
“Paint the living room” can mean different things. List walls, ceiling, trim, doors, and closets separately. For exterior work, clarify which siding, fascia, soffits, doors, and other surfaces are included. Note anything specifically excluded.
Ask about preparation and materials
The estimate should describe the preparation and repairs being priced, along with the proposed paint or coating. Discuss major color changes and how coverage will be handled. Ask how unexpected repair needs will be documented and approved.
Compare the whole scope
Look at protection, cleanup, access, scheduling assumptions, and the final walkthrough—not just the total. If one price is much lower, ask what differs. A brief written explanation is more valuable than an assumption about quality.
Keep changes in writing
If you add a room or change the scope, agree on the cost and timing before the extra work begins. TradeWind’s approach is straightforward: clear written estimates, labor and materials explained, and approval before additional work. Ask questions until the plan makes sense to you.
